Another sketchbook drawing from my first book. It’s a little grim. Sorry about that!
W: I don’t understand.
J: I don’t really expect you to.
My aunt is ill; I made her this card.
(Sorry to repost; had to fix all kinds o’ things on the image…I blame ghosts…)

For Halloween, I’m posting chapters of my gothic ghost story novel THE UNWELCOME on Fictionaut. The story follows a young historic preservationist hired to evaluated a decrepit estate (with a grisly history) on a small island off the coast of Maine. You can start with the Prelude HERE.
Then, proceed on…
more to come…
In the elevator in my building, just now:
Child: What are you going to be for Halloween?
Me: I don’t know. What are you going to be?
Child: I’m not telling you until you tell me.
Me: Uh…I honestly haven’t thought about it.
Mother of Child: [Gives exasperated look of ‘Just say SOMETHING’)
Me: Maybe a ghost?
Child: Ghosts are dead!
Me: True…what are you going to be?
Mother: [shakes head]
Child: An iPhone!
