I’ve come to know truth
as more a door and less the roof
but I can’t forgive you…

[Fitzgerald] believes that, for some obsessive, unconfident artists, their images will destroy them if they remain unexpressed. Burne-Jones might have said, ‘with Jung’: ‘If I had left these images hidden in my emotions, they would have torn me in pieces.’ Art for such people is a form of exorcism. It is the job of the biographer to enter the inner life, understand the obsessive images, and see how they become the ‘burden’ of the works. The ‘burden’…for Burne-Jones [are], ‘the enchantment of the willing victim, sleep, waiting, imprisonment, loneliness, guiding, rescue, the quest, losing and finding, tending the helpless, flying, sea-crossing, clinging together, the ritual procession and dance, love dominant and without pity, the haunting angel, the entry into life.’
